  1. Microfibre Towels
  2. Paper Towel
  3. 600/1000 grit Wet and dry sandpaper
  4. Nitrile /Latex Gloves
  5. Small spatula
  6. Container with warm water
  7. Masking tape – to mask off areas not to be redyed

Step 1: Reconditioning / Cleaning

Apply Rejuvenator Leather Conditioner #1 generously to your steering wheel. Gently massage the leather with your hands (wearing gloves if you have sensitive skin) to work the nutrients in. This process may need to be repeated several times until the leather becomes supple, depending on its dryness. You may notice the surface becoming tacky or developing a slight haze; this indicates dirt and grit being drawn out of the pores.

Use Pristine Clean #2 with a soft, damp cloth, sponge, or terry towel.

Rinse the cloth in warm water, wring it dry, and wipe the surface again.

Step 2: Prepping Your Leather Steering wheel for Dyeing

  • Spray prepping onto the 600 wet and dry sandpaper and a small amount onto the steering wheel.
  • Lightly wet sand (with the grain) keeping the sandpaper wet with Prepping Agent #3 to smooth out any imperfections.
  • Apply more prepping agent as required to keep the surface wet.
  • Wipe the surface to remove old dye. Ensure all previous treatments are removed.
  • Work with the grain.
  • The better preparation the better the acceptance of the dye.

Step 3: Repair Cracks in the Steering Wheel

Fill cracks using a spatula with Crack Filler #4. Apply only into the cracks, not on the surface. Mix one drop of dye (no more) with the filler to assist colour matching. Build Crack Filler #4 in layers then allow it to dry. Sand off excess using Step 2.

Step 4: Steering Wheel Leather Re-dying

  • Once the leather surface is clean and prepared, apply Leather Dye #5 using either a brush or spray method.
  • Ideal Conditions: Maintain a temperature between 20 to 30°C with low humidity.
  • Mixing Instructions: Pour the Leather Dye #5 into a suitable container for thorough stirring, ensuring even pigment distribution due to settling.
  • Start Small: Begin with a small, inconspicuous area to familiarise yourself with the product.
  • Application Technique: Dampen a ball of paper towel with bottled water, then wring it dry. Shape the towel into a "powder puff" without any edges. Dip the "puff" lightly into the dye bowl to avoid excess. Using moderate pressure, wipe the surface in a circular motion or dab with the dye-soaked towel. Avoid back-and-forth motions to prevent streaking.
  • Apply 2-3 extremely thin coats in all directions for optimal coverage.
  • Drying and Additional Coats: Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying subsequent coats as needed.
  • Assess the need for additional dye application; if done correctly initially, repeat as necessary until satisfied. Several thin coats provide a more natural look than a single thick coat.

Step 5: Curing

Though not particularly challenging, proceed slowly and carefully.

  • Allow the dye to cure overnight before applying Clear Coat #6 to protect it from oils from your hands.
  • Let the project sit untouched for 48 hours, as the dye will be fragile. After this period, you can reinstall your seats or interior.

Step 6: Final Touches Allow the project to remain untouched for 48 hours.

  • Buff the leather surface with a soft cloth.
  • Remove imperfections with fine sandpaper.
  • Optionally, apply a thin film of Leatherique® Wax for lustre.

Regular Maintenance: Every twelve months, use Rejuvenator Leather Conditioner #1 and Pristine Clean #2 for upkeep.
